While I understand your frustration (I get digests on the Webmasters list), 
For those of us who get individual emails it would be way too confusing to 
get rid of the whole message. But, this does not mean that if you reply to 
an email you shouldn't do some cutting of the original message, especially 
if it is long and you are only replying to one part of it. So, yes please 
chop the messages you are replying to and leave just enough to keep the 
context of your reply understandable would be my advice.
