[Artemisia] SCA Court - sitting in state

Greetings Cousins,

I remember times in the Kingdom of the West, where all things are perfect (old joke for those of us who joined the SCA dinosaurs roamed the earth :>) that there were indeed occasions called "sitting in state" or "public audiences" where the Crown could be approached more one on one, as was mentioned, where retainers were seated down rows along the sides of the hall (or not) and could also be approached, such as Peers or Territorial Barons and Baronesses. I would like to see more of this and more outside of "court" awardings. I remember Crown Prince Konrad's Knighting ceremony at midnight at a past Raptor War where any and all were invited to attend (not part of Court). It was so extremely moving. (Although how he stood being washed in the stream water which had come directly down from a mountain glacier, I just do not know - burrrrr!). Perhaps more special awarding could have their time and place announced, but actually take place aside from "Court." I DO think that our first
timers shoud continue to be welcomed in open Court, to really show their value to us all and the SCA as a whole. But a chance to present them less formally, one on one, would really be a nice opportunity to have.

Shalom,

Dame Rachel

IOne thing I have seen in the past, and really liked (and felt was a nice
more "period" addition) were those occassions where a set of
royalty/nobility had, in addition to the official courts, announced periods
of time when they would be "sitting in state" (I believe those were the
words, I could be wrong there). Often this included times during or around
a tournament or arts gathering, when those who were sitting the thrones had
it made known that this would be the appropriate time to bring gifts,
recommendations, suggestions, or just introduce yourself. This made the
pacing a little less pressured than during a formal court, and those on the
thrones could take the time they felt was appropriate for each person who
visited, without the entire populace assembled, potentially getting tired or
bored with conversations they can't really hear. It also seemed to provide
a time where newer players felt a little more comfortable approaching "Those
Important People" - when thry weren't looking "too busy", and Everyone
wasn't watching.

Just my 2 cents,
Aeschine
