Gryphon’s Prize Arts Competition and Kingdom War Practice

May 01, 2004

Shire of Gryphon’s Lair

(Ogden/Layton, UT)

As the snow melts and the days turn warm, Artemisian artisans un-cramp their fingers and look around to survey their long winters work. Hearing of the great works of their people, Their Royal Majesties, Konrad and Kortland have called forth seeking the to survey the best of the Gryphon Realm.

Therefore, Their Majesties have declared that the Shire of Gryphon’s Lair will host the first Gryphon’s Prize Regional Arts and Sciences Competition. Their Royal Majesties do invite one and all to participate. The activities of Saturday, May 1st shall be the Arts and Sciences Competition, in the new Kingdom competition format. This is your best opportunity to give yourself, your documentation and your entries a trial run before heading off to Kingdom Arts and Sciences Championships in November. Although its beginnings are small it is hoped that this format will allow for future competitions to occur in a variety of regional venues in future years. Using the regions outlined in the A&S Handbook, these competitions will be combined into a N-S or E-W grouping allowing for two per year. For this initial year the first two will both take place in the Shire of Gryphon’s Lair.

Their Majesties have also declared that on the second day of May, there shall be held a great Kingdom War Practice, so that Their combatants shall stay ready to defend Artemisia. There is a possibility of a few hours of armored combat held offsite in the late afternoon, on Saturday, as well. Classes both in the traditional and combative arts shall also be scheduled during the day on Saturday. The schedule of these classes shall be available online through links provided on the Artemisian website.

A Kingdom Fundraiser shall be held in the form of a raffle. Many wonderful goods shall be on display. Raffle tickets shall be $1 each, or 12 for $10. There will be a dinner break, with an extensive list of nearby restaurants being provided at the door. After the dinner break, we shall return to the site for the evening’s festivities.

The site is The Junction at Weber State University. The Junction is a large site including a sheltered area where smoking is permitted. There are no pets allowed. The building is handicap accessible. Merchants are encouraged, however, no food or beverages may be sold on site. Please contact the autocrat for reservations of merchant space. This site is DRY. Brewing entries shall be judged off-site. Please notify the Kingdom Minister in advance, if you will be entering any alcoholic beverages. There will be no pre-registration requirement for A&S entries this year. However, all entrants are strongly encouraged to contact the Kingdom Minister to let her know of their intent to enter, so that sufficient judges may be in place prior to the event. It is highly suggested that writing entries be submitted to the Kingdom Minister in advance so that the judges have time to thoroughly read the entries. If you are willing to judge, please contact the Kingdom Minister as soon as possible. If you
are willing to teach a class, please contact the Autocrat as soon as possible.

Kingdom War Practice shall be held on Sunday, May 2nd. Bring your armor and authorization cards, and prepare for melee practice and formation training. This is a large grassy park with ample shade and some picnic tables. There is a restroom on-site and several restaurants within walking and close driving distance. There is on-street parking in front of the combat area. Pets are not allowed, as this is a bird refuge, please leave your furry ones at home. The park is along a river, there are lovely paths from which to access the water and feed the birds. Please keep an extra careful eye on your children. The park does not permit staking tents or sunshades, due to an extensive sprinkler system.
