[Artemisia] Sage cover art

As a past Chronicler for a baronial newsletter, I find
this entire conversation evolving into something
rather insulting. This began innocently enough. A
challenge was issued to find artists to provide cover
artwork for Sage Advice, our kingdom newsletter.

We should be grateful to Lady Freydis and her talented
husband for the work they have put into this newletter
and to him for filling a gap that very few others in
this entire kingdom failed to fill.

I have seen her pleas for original artwork. It is not
like they have not tried to find other possibilities.
If you search through back issues of the Sage or even
back posts to this board, you will also find these
pleas.

Think about this for a minute. Our Kingdom newletter.
 This is how we are represented to all active members;
a copy of this is sent to the SCA archivist to save
for future generations; this is how we as a kingdom
represent ourselves. When we use free clip art or
just scan in a pretty picture from a book as a cover,
what does that say about as a kingdom? We don't have
artists either willing or able to provide OUR
newsletter with 12 drawings for covers?

Since I don't know the people who say they had
submitted something and it was rejected, I cannot say
on what grounds it was returned. I do know from my
own experience that there were some things I was not
able to publish. It was either given to me in a form
I was not able to use, it was to light to scan, or it
was a photograph with individuals who refused to have
it published.

Photographs are a slipperly slope. You MUST have ALL
the individuals in the photograph sign a waiver before
you publish it. If they decide they didn't want to
have their picture published and wanted to push their
case, it could mean a world of headaches.

To second guess and add your 0.02 cents now is very
callous to the current Chronicler. As the old saying
goes, if you think you can do a better job, then
please step up the plate and show us. Please provide
your artwork and submissions to either the Sage
Chronicler or your local chronicler. I can tell you
that they are always looking for articles, artwork,
and information.
