[Artemisia] Trimming Your Posts, or You Were Warned...

Okay, I've made two requests recently asking folks to take more care
in trimming their posts to keep them concise and readable. I feel that
we've become sloppy when replying and hoped a nudge would get things
back on track.

I was wrong.

So a number of posters will discover that they are suddenly on Digest
instead of receiving individual e-mails. Perhaps I've been a bit
heavy-handed in this initial round of 'punishments', but I wanted to
get the point across and even I was surprised at who and how many
folks I've had to deal with this way. I some cases the quoting runs
four or more messages deep (You post a reply to someone's reply in
reply to a post replying to a message, and include the whole bloody
thread).

I don't want to single folks out publicly, so this is my preferred
response. It's one that is used on other mailing lists; lets see how
it works here. If you find you are suddenly on Digest, consider
yourself warned. To change your account back, go to this page -

- and click the "Unsubscribe or edit options" button. Scroll down to
find where to turn off the Digest Mode. Contact me directly if you
cannot get it to work.

And if you truly cannot figure out why you were singled out for this
treatment, go here -

- and scroll down to your name. Look at your recent posts and then
re-read the guidelines below.

For the record, here's the new posting guidelines I'll be enforcing,
borrowed from another list and edited for our purposes -

********************

1. Do -not- top-post. Start typing your reply at the -end- of the
quoted material. This is a matter great debate on the Net; personally
I much prefer bottom-posting, but don't usually mind others
top-posting. But if you follow this guideline, you will be *much* more
likely to trim the quotes in your message properly.

2. -TRIM- -YOUR- -QUOTES-!

2.a. Trim the -depth- of your quotes. We do -not- need to read the
previous seventy (or even four) exchanges to "properly understand the
context" of your post.

2.b. Trim the -length- of your quotes. If you're quoting three
paragraphs, and you're contributing only one or two sentences of
original material, then you are quoting too much. And in any event,
don't quote more than one "screen" (about three modest-sized
paragraphs) of text!

Any questions, you know where to reach me.
