[Artemisia] Preserving My Hands

here's another take on it from somebody who handstitches way more than
a man was meant to: analyze your movements carefully. i have issues
with my forearms and such as you describe only when i'm doing heavy
duty leatherwork. what i've noticed is that the pressures and movements
neccessary for the high-tension work stress my arms out due to the
prolonged application of extreme pressure. you may be making
counter-productive movements in the process of stitching and gripping
things too hard. maintain your wrist stance and grip the needle with
your middle finger and thumb. also, try not to involve any unneccessary
wrist articulation in your stitch technique and purge your hands of
uneccessary tension. believe it or not, unneccessary tension is the
number one cause of performance related injuries in musicians. let me
know how things are going and drop me a line. a good book for learning
the development of better technique is titled "playing less hurt"
(author escapes me now), available from sharmusic.com. i tuly hope this
helps.
