I have been wanting to go to Gulf Wars for quite some time, especially since I have family in Lumberton, MS and visited there many times while I was growing up. I do miss the area, since I am from the Gulf Coast and I hope to be able to attend one of their wars sometime in the next few years. I look forward to visiting there again. The last time I was there was in January of 1999 when my father passed away. Alas, one day I will be able to return for a visit. It is still beautiful there in-spite of the hurricane damage. I know we all would enjoy the event and the hospitality that is there. Hopefully we can send a sizeable contingent there in the next few years. I can give you a list of things you must see or do while in the area!
Looking forward to a nice visit back home in the hopefully not so distant future,

Lady Helen Might de Gunthorpe

Artemisian Cousins. My new friend Jarl Skeggi reports a fine time had at
Gulf Wars and recommends all to give this event a try. I thought you
  might be interested. See below.

Skeggi posted this on the An Tir Fight Practice List. Thought I'd
  share it.
  ---------------------------------------------------------------------

  Greetings All,

Just thought I'd let everyone know that it would be worth your while
to save $10 a week in a special savings acount called Gulf Wars for
  next year.

Permanent structures such as huts, castles and walls. Mobile ramps
to scale the walls during war scenarios! Tourneys, feasts, pubs,
parties and all the Southern Hospitality you can stand!

There is a reason that Gulf Wars is the second most popular event in
the SCA. You have to experience it to understand. Once you go
there will be no question in your mind though!

Every single person I met was genuinly nice. On and off the field.
I met hundereds of folks in just 4 days. I fought nearly 300
different fighters one on one over several days. You can't buy
  training like that!

I fought in the Champions tourney and won my bout. It was quite a
unique tourney. The King and Queen of Gleann Abhann chose me to be
their Champion for the first round of the Knights Division. A King
and Queen from another land called forth their Champion. We fought,
I won and that was it for the both of us. There where 15 challenges
in the Squires division and 15 in the Chivalry division. The King
with the most victorious champions gets the war point. First one
fight tourney I've ever been in.

I also fought in Ansteorra's tourney. It was mixed shield sizes,
mixed weapons and I only succeeded into three rounds. Had some
grand fights and impressed His Majesty with An Tirian Chivalry.

I have a nasty habbit I learned from Duke Thorin. Be the first one
on the field in armor and the last one to leave. Two days in a row
An Tir took the field first and did not leave until the field was
either empty or yielded to An Tir. The battles on Friday and
Saturday where fast and fierce. There where only like 3 or 4
battles each day that took maybe an hour or a bit more then onto
pick up fighting that lasted 5 hours +.

I've been telling everyone I have to sleep standing up because there
are bruises all over my body to the point I can hardly lie down.

The gauging was all appropriate. Some took lighter than others,
approaching ranges varied and power of blows varied a bit but seemed
like everyone was hitting plenty hard. They still use long whippy
sticks down there though. Throw alot of offside shots to the
  forearm and offside ribs.

All in all the fighting was grand! Very honorable and very
chivalric. Lots of really good positive communication.

Well I'm off for now, just had to share a bit of my weekend with All
  Yall.

  Night
Jarl Skaggi Bob (My official Gulf War Title)
