[Artemisia] RE: Background checks

I am going to play a little "Devil's Advocate" here, as I can see a little bit of "witch hunt" already happening.

A sex offender is not necessarily a child molester!

Case in point. When we lived in Colorado, we had a friend of the family that was on the sex offender registry, probation, and who knows what all. He had had sex with a 16 year old that had lied about her age. Mommy go wind of it, and had him arrested, tried, and convicted of statutory rape.

Now, aside from the lack of good judgement, he is basically a good person, and we had no problem with him around our children. In fact, he made sure we knew about his problem, because we had to write a letter to his probation officer saying that we knew his history, and he had our permission to even be in our house.

However, we did not ever leave him alone with our children...

I bring this up merely to warn against our natural tendancy to sometimes, in our attempt to protect our children, judge others unfairly, and incorrectly.

I stated earlier that I am not opposed to the idea of a check on people working with our children. However, there are also the rights of individuals involved. As a father, I want the check. As a citizen, I abhor the need for a check. Father wins, but we need to be careful as we walk this path...

Padruig
Father of 4 wrack members, and personally in agreement with THL Morgan on final disposition of molesters...

<snip>Because of that it's easy to find out who
in your area is a registered sex offender. Weber County, Utah, has over
400 registered sex offenders listed on the National Alert Registry. <snip>

<Snip>I was amazed that there were so many in our area. As disturbing as that
number is, I'm sure there are even more that have never been caught and
convicted.<snip>
