I've never purchased fabric from Wal Mart, however I can include two links 
to sites that carry some marvelous period fabrics:

Also, it is not uncommon for Joanne Fabrics to carry linen these days as 
well as frequent coupons, half cost notions and threads, etc.  Hancocks has 
a tendency to carry many fine woolens.

Hopefully this will help in finding good fabrics at reasonable prices.
