[Artemisia] cordage for spring pole lathes

Greetings, having been a historical and some times histarical wood wooker i wanted to add my 2 cents worth.I worked a few seasons at a living history farm.

I looked up the spring pole lathes used at colonial williamsburg in my woodwrites work book and others writen by Roy Underhill. thay show two types. the most common is good old sisle"hemp" rope. True hemp rope is no longer readly had here in the USA but Sisle rope is.try to find a tight twist rope . the smother the rope is the smother it runs . If you want to make your own buy a spool of bailing twine and you can twist all you will ever need and make your own sizes and lengths.

We use 1/4 and 3/8 with no problems. smaller pieces were some times easier to work with a smaller dia. rope. When it is first used we got a lot of Floaty fibers till it Wore in, a bit of wax helped this. i also soak all my ropes in water seal like thompsons and then dry well this helps to prevent rot. ( this works great on tent ropes too it helps stop stretching when it gets wet from dew or rain and they dont get all stained and black.)

The next thing that can be used is leather straping about 1/2 in wide and limber about 1/8in thick. ( raw hide works well too either twisted or flat.though it was not pictured i know from personal experience of its use)

*** please note that if you use leather or rope that has been waxed or oiled it can stain the wood you are turning ... even dry cordage can "burnish" the wood as it slips one the turning***

These are by no means the "only " things that were /are used i have only mentioned some of the more common ones I have used or seen used.

I also highly recommend all of Roy Underhills books they are jammed packed with info.

he did have a series on PBS call the Wood Writes shop. but its not shown in all areas.

If i can help futher please fell free to email me!

  Best of luck!

I was making a small spring pole lathe for my desk and
came to the point of adding cords. Being an archer I
first went to bowstring material as mundane
competition bowstring doesn't stretch and is extremely
strong however that didn't look or feel right. I then
tried sewing thread and that didn't hold up turning
the wood or between the treddle arm and the pole.

Does anybody have any suggestion for a fine cord
material that looks period but strong enough to take
some abuse (both spring and friction.)

Michael

Perhaps waxed linen thread? Like what you might use for sewing heavy
leather?

Just a suggestion.

That's an idea. Might still have the problem with how
it feels as the competition bowstring material is also
waxed. Maybe I can find an unwaxed thread that will
hold up. Thanks!

That would probably work but the problem is the color.
Any idea on how to dye an unwaxed floss to more of a
natural material.

What would they have used in period? What about something like hemp cord? or
jute? I know hemp would be appropriate; although I don't believe jute would
be, it would look less glaringly "modern," since it's a natural fiber.
You might also try something braided, or plied cable-fashion. Or done with
a lucet--lucet cords are great for lacing things, because of the
squareness....
Heck, for that matter, depending on how long you need it to be, what about
an extra-tough, braided bootlace in a non-obnoxious color? Or some of the
cord you can get at places like Army-Navy, that's used for rock climbing and
such? They're probably all of modern manufacture, but I bet a lot of them
are abrasion-resistant, etc. Or cord used to lace awnings into place
(*that* stuff is tough!)

how about artificial sinew or real sinew for that matter? You'd probably want to weave a few of them together so they weren't so sharp, but that sinew will last longer than your machine.

Dental floss is AWESOME by the way, even if it doesn't look right.

This isn't a problem with my full sized spring pole
lathe but I'm working on a 1/4 scale model. Problem
is I am generating too much heat if I try to turn any
wood so I am breaking strings.

There is/was a program on PBS called Woodwright's Workshop that starred
Roy Underhill. He used hand tools and man-powered tools including a
lathe he ran like people do with spinning wheels (don't know the proper
word, sorry).
Anyway, he wrote several books about using these tools to make wonderful
projects. I would suggest checking with your local library to see if
they have any of his books. There might be something in one of them
that tells what type of string/cord he used in the lathe.

Problem is I'm building a 1/4 scale model of the
springpole lathe Roy Underhill uses in his show. On a
full sized model you don't get the problems with heat
and stress that you get on a miniture version.
