Oh yes wonderful.....It's Orson Scott Card... the books about Alvin Maker.
  The first one is actually called Seventh Son. I think it came out in the late
  80's.
  In order they are:
   
  Seventh Son (Tales of Alvin Maker, Book 1)
Red Prophet (Tales of Alvin Maker, Book 2) 
Prentice Alvin (Tales of Alvin Maker, Book 3)
Alvin Journeyman (Tales of Alvin Maker, Book 4)
Heartfire (Tales of Alvin Maker, Book 5)
The Crystal City: (Tales of Alvin Maker, Book 6)
