Don't rule out mid-sized pickups.

I really enjoy my '07 Chevy Colorado (4x4, crew-cab, Z71). Seats 4 large adults
comfy, and has all that bed space that can be covered with a tonneau cover or
small camper shell. 15-17 mpg in town, 23-25 highway (17mpg towing a 2000lb
trailer). 4000lb towing capacity. Very quiet and very smooth ride. Take off the
tonneau or shell, and haul stuff.... something I couldn't do with my suburban.
Now then the bed is only 5ft long, which can be a drawback if you are hauling
long things. But as people have mentioned, Thule type 'torpedo' mounted roof rack
based containers could take care of that. the Colorado/Canyon comes in a plethora
of configurations/price points.
