While this is a very interesting and intriguing book, it does say right on the front cover "A Novel". Also, it is found in the fiction section of Barnes & Noble. It was a good book to read though and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good read set in medieval times that fully expands on a "what if" scenerio. The author's explanation of how Joan managed to rise in a man's world and become Pope is very interesting and entertaining.
