The Kingdom of Atenveldt is pleased to announce 17 classes in the "All
Things Viking" track at the upcoming Kingdom Arts & Sciences Collegium (see
the class descriptions at the end of this missive).  This track is only one
of 14 tracks (over 110 classes) planned at Collegium!
   
Class registration will be available when you arrive onsite, on a
first-come, first serve, basis. However, you can speed your entrance into
the event by pre-paying your site fee on the ACCEPS website
(http://acceps.ansteorra.org/).Adult Members $12, Non-members $15, Youth (10
to 17) $6, Youth under 10 years – FREE (these fees cover both days). 

Event pre-registration is strongly recommended, especially if you are
interested in taking 9:30 AM classes on Saturday. The site opens at 8:30 AM
and we expect the line at troll will be long that day.  Pre-registration
will speed your entrance into the event, keep you on time for that first
class of the day, and allow you to be one of the first to sign up for
classes that have class limits!

INSTRUCTOR: Viscountess Deirdre d'Argenteuil, OL
CLASS: Constructing your own Viking Treasure Necklace
DESC: I provide beads, stringing materials, wire, findings and all equipment
necessary for constructing your own Viking Treasure Necklace along with a
color handout, lecture and my personal assistance in teaching you simple
wire-wrapping techniques. Fee covers necklace materials and handout.

CLASS: Viking Furry Hat Class
DESC: Learn the techniques for making a four or six-panel Viking Furry Hat.

CLASS: Overview of Viking weapons and weapon smithing
DESC: An historical overview of the core Viking age weapons; the Sword, Axe,
and Spear. Learn about Viking Iron and steel production & metallurgy,
weaponsmithing tools & methods used by the Vikings as well as the types,
styles, and details of Viking swords, Axes, and Spears based on surviving
pieces. Main focus is on the 800-1100 AD time frame. Color handout provided
for a $2 fee.

CLASS: Period Tool Making
DESC: An overview of period tool making with focus on tools from the Viking
aged Mastermyr find. Core tools reviewed are a blacksmithing hammer, tongs,
nail heading tool & nail making, blacksmithing punch, adzes, axes,
woodworking chisels, & a bow saw. Blacksmithing tools, methods, metallurgy,
& heat treating as it related to tool making will also be covered. Not a
hands-on class, but examples of completed tools & blacksmithing tools will
be shown. $2 fee for color handout.

DESC: A full overview of blacksmithing covering history & development, items
made by smiths in period times, metallurgy, tools, methods, heat treating,
and good sources for info & tools/supplies. Not a hands-on class but tools

CLASS: Viking Apron Dress
DESC: Learn four different patterns for making the Viking apron dress (or
hanggerok), and how to decorate it with simple embroidery stitches and how
to accessorize.

CLASS:  Felt Appliqué for Viking garb
DESC: How to make layered appliqués to decorate Viking tunics, apron
dresses, gowns, caps, and pouches. You will get to make an your own Viking
style appliqué and embroider it in the workshop. All materials and tools
provided.

CLASS: Embroidery in the Viking Age
DESC: An overview of embroidery found in Viking Age burials. Review of other
art forms of the Viking era that can yield inspiration when designing your
own embroidery.

CLASS: An introduction to Tablet Weaving
DESC: A basic introduction to tablet or card weaving, covering some basic
weaving terms, a brief history of tablet weaving, followed by the hands-on
aspects of warping up your tablets and the basic principles of weaving with
tablets. No experience is necessary. A loom, shuttle, yarn and tablets will
be provided. Please bring scissors. If you have a loom of your own, you are
encouraged to bring it.

CLASS: Intermediate Tablet Weaving: Egyptian Diagonals
DESC: A hands-on, how-to course for the tablet weaving technique known as
"Egyptian Diagonals". This is not an introductory course so students should
have some experience with tablet weaving and come with their loom already
warped. The loom needs to be warped with 20 cards, 4 of which are border
cards (2 on each edge) and 16 of which are the pattern cards. The pattern
cards need to be threaded with the top two holes (generally called A and B)
in one color and the bottom two holes (C and D) in a different color. A
combination of dark and light color generally works best.

CLASS: PART I & PART II: Turnshoe Workshop (Part I=Saturday, Part II=Sunday)
DESC: Hands-on instruction on how to make period turnshoes. When you leave,
you will hopefully have one of your pair complete. To fully participate in
the workshop, you must bring the following list of materials: 10-14 oz
vegetable tanned leather (for the shoe sole), Softer thinner leather (for
upper), Triangular leather needles, Regular sewing needles, Pliers (needle
nose are good), Awl, Thread (machine embroidery, silk or linen), Bees wax,
Leather scissors or razor knife (or both), Pine board for using your awl,
and Scraps of fabric for patterning.

CLASS: The Foolproof Tunic Featuring the Keyhole Neckline
DESC: Learn the secrets of making a long (underdress for a woman), or short
(shirt for a man) tunic which fits nicely and features the keyhole neckline.
Each student will take measurements and learn how to chalk a pattern for ANY
body type, man, woman, or child. No more guessing! Go home with an extensive
handout and personalized patterns for the tunic and keyhole.

CLASS: Viking Age Men's Bag Trousers (using Dame Angele's method)
DESC: This class will discuss the construction of Viking Bag Trousers. They
are the really full pants that end just below the knee and are worn with
wicklebander. Each student will leave class with a pattern and the knowledge
to construct these pants. Students will need to bring these measurements if
they are patterning for someone who will not be present: Around waist, Waist
to knee, Around widest part of calf

CLASS: Norse (Viking) Mythology: an Intro
DESC: An overview of myths & legends; Gods & Goddesses-roles & stories; A
bit about heroic poems including Poetic Edda, Younger Edda, Beowulf; and
lastly where we still encounter viking myth in today's world.

INSTRUCTOR: Viscountess Hastini Chandra, OP, OL
CLASS: Introduction to Runes & Reading and Writing Runes
DESC: Intro to runes as used from 50 AD to 2000 AD.  Learn to read & write
anything in the Elder Futhark, the earliest known Futhark (alphabet).  Come
read the story Hastini will share only in futhark-find out what can happen
if you annoy a minor goddess in the viking woods!  Find out how 20th century
vikings in rural Minnesota, with too much time on their hands, bamboozled
the world!

CLASS: Naalbinding
DESC: Beginning class on Viking string art called Naalbinding. Learn how to
make a tankard cover and/or bottle holder. Thread and needle provided. Come
join the discussion and see a display of items that can be made with
advanced stitching.
