As I am living in Italy, and am married into the de Medici family, I recognize Cosimo I de Medici from Florence.  Of course, I am born of Spain and still look to their far shores with longing, but since Cosimo did marry a Spaniard,Eleanora de Toledo, I look with much more favor upon him.   Cosimo I de Medici, Granduca di Toscana succeeded to the title of Duca di Firenze in 1537. He was created Granduca di Toscana in 1569, by Pope Pius V, who I look to for my spiritual leadership as Bishop of Rome.

Subject: [Artemisia] Who's Your "King"? -- Authenticity

Greetings All,

One of the purposes of the SCA is to study the medieval person we play.  Sometimes, this gets lost in all the "society" part of the SCA, so I wanted to prompt a thread on who your king would be in your persona's period/time.  Maybe it will prompt some folks to do some studying and learn more about our hobby.

So, my King is Edward the Third.  His son and Heir is Edward of Woodstock (now more widely known as Edward the Black Prince).  England has been involved in a war with France over succession of the French Crown, of which Edward has most legitimate claim.  The war started as open battle in 1337, and has been going on in fits and starts since then.  The recent battles of Crecy and Poitiers have gone to the English, but now, in the 1370's, the French have won back some of the English claimed territory....largely from refusing battle.

The Pope for England is Urban, but the Schism created by the French anti-Pope, Clement, has caused religious problems, to go along with the political issues.  So who is your Pope?

Some of you will be able to wade in immediately on this thread.  Maybe some will have to do some reading and research to learn what their persona would think, who they would be aligned with etc.

Should be fun!

Alan
