[Artemisia] Kingdom A&S entrants

Goodness, what a great discussion.

Just wanted to clarify before anyone got frightened by the comment below.
The Kingdom Arts and Sciences Champion does NOT host the next year's
competition. The requirements for Champion are basically to encourage Arts and
Sciences across the Kingdom and to create an item of Kingdom Regalia during
the next year.(and there are plenty of such items which would be
appropriate)

As far as entering for Champion, I can tell you all that the first time I
won this competition I had no expectation of winning. After all, Duchess
Caryn had challenged all kingdom Laurels to enter that year and had entered
for champion herself. That was likely the highest or one of the highest
years for those going for Champion and not a bad idea to issue such a
challenge to the Laurels every few years so we don't look like we are sitting on
same. However, back to the subject, I had just entered for the experience
and because a judge or two had made negative (to me) comments the previous
year. Rather than discouraging me, it got my "dander up" and I was
determined to "show them" that I was better than they had intimidated. I guess I
was, but there wasn't a person more surprised than I in that court when they
announced the new champion (first time in my whole life that I fainted ...
really).

So yes, it takes a rather large body of work across several grand
categories but, if you look at those categories, most of us are already doing work
in several (even those stick jocks out there are doing armor and costuming
and usually some sort of "SCA Specific" items - like oh gee weapons?).
And yes, many a competition is won on the documentation but that is not
something to fear, unless you are doing it the night before and long after you
did the item. Do it as you are doing your item(s) and you will be surprised
at how easy it is.

And lastly, if you want a good idea of what it takes to win, either in a
category or overall, the best thing you can do is judge. I am sure that
Countess Casamira will be looking for judges this weekend and there is no
better way to prepare for next years competition than judging this year.

That depends entirely on what happens in this year's competition- if he is
host of next year's competition, as outgoing champion, I'd say he met the
challenge. If not, I certainly would not think less of him for taking a
year off after entering this year. However, I reserve the right to taunt
him, as always. ;-)
