I see the SCA as very different from a professional organization.  I pay
dues to the Canadian Livestock Registry in order to register my sheep, and
also belong to the breed organization.  But I see those as a necessary cost
of doing business, for which I get compensated.  (my animals are worth more
if they are registered, and the breed org. offers useful info and buyer
contacts)  

In all reality the SCA is an enjoyable game, that most of us have put a lot
of $$ into over the years, in return for the enjoyment and fellowship that
we get in return.  However in hard times, these are often the first things
that must be cut.  So I can see the possibility of higher membership dues
causing a cut in the number of members, and thus leaving fewer people to
shoulder the financial load...  Just sayn'  ;-)
