It is not absolute as far a sharing germs, but there were no openings - no  
doors or hatches between the two sides,

When the  barn is side by side or the first floor - there is warmth - there 
is also  diseases that occur between animals and humans in that situation 
(and of  course I can't remember which at the moment).  I do remember that  
once there was some distance between the 2 it was a better environment for  
humans.
