Actually, I did a research paper on this in college ("the Chinese Caused the Chivalric Ideal", got an A+); the probably-real person Artorius was a Briton with Roman military training tht fought the Saxon/Jute/Angle invaders around 500 AD. IIRC, The "legend" of Arthur was first written down by Geoffrey of Monmouth around 1000 AD, with "enhancements" that went well with the current (for Geoff) political climate. Since then, the legend has been re-produced every other century or so (until movies/TV, which sped the repro cycle up to every decade or so), with appropriate adjustments to match the current political/"pop" culture climate (bear in mind that Washington Irving was "pop culture" 250 years ago).

p.s.- "Pendragyn" is a Briton/Welsh word, if you can't guess what it means look at the Welsh flag (it doesn't mean "white and green field")
