[Artemisia] Kingdom Collegium class descriptions, part 1

Greetings!

Kingdom Collegium is fast approaching and we are pleased to announce that
we have 45 classes being offered.

We have attached the list of classes and their descriptions to the FILES
section of the Kingdom of Artemisia Facebook page as well as to the Barony
of Sentinels' Keep Facebook page.

We are also posting list on the Aerie and the Barony Sentinels' Keep Yahoo
page in two emails.  The list is 8 pages long and each email will be 4
pages long.

If you have trouble opening the file, please email me (Annys) at (

*16th C European Women’s Clothing – An Introduction*

Instructor: Lady Jane Fox

Length: 55 minutes

Brief Description of class: Are you interested in late period clothing,
have an idea of what it looks like, but are unsure of

where to start? This class will cover the basic silhouette and layers
necessary to complete your outfit from the skin out.

These basics will enable you to create clothing for all social classes.
This image and example filled class applies to

European countries in the 16th C. such as France, Italy, Germany, Spain and
more – not just England and “Elizabethan.”

*1001 Nights Entertainment: Medieval Arabic Scholarship & Pastimes*

Instructor: Mistress Iduna Snorradottir

Length: 110 minutes

Brief Description of class: Covers the knowledge & learning of the Arab
people, with roots in Islam. (Emphasis is NOT on religion.) The Arabs
preserved and improved on much of the learning that was lost in the
West.  Discussion
of mathematics, alchemy, medicine, botany, herbalism, astronomy,
literature, calligraphy, the visual arts, music & dance, board games, and
horse breeding.

*Advanced Wire Weaving*

Instructor: Baroness Casamira Jawjalny

Length:  55 minutes

Brief Description of class:  This is for folk who know how to do wire
weaving.  Will cover use of different gauge wires, different mandrels,
single double and triple stitches, alternate ways to begin the weaving and
the effect on drawing the wire. How to finish the weaving as a necklace or
other item.

Students need to bring:  enthusiasm and writing implement



*Armored Combat Class Series*

Instructor: Duke Patrick O’Malley

Length:  each class is 2 hours

Students need to bring: Fighting gear will be helpful throughout the day
but is not required

·         Training for Tournament

     Brief Description of class: How to reach your goals in SCA combat,
from the occasional fighter to the crown

        contender.

·         Calibration—Wrist Flicks to Rhino Hides

     Brief Description of class: A calibration workshop. This is the most
controversial and problematic aspect of

         our sport. Let’s explore how we perceive blow calibration and the
problems it causes on and off the field.

·         Deception and Misdirection in the Fight

   Brief Description of class: How to deceive and manipulate your opponent
on the field.

·         Sparing

   Brief Description of class: Practical application time. Let’s see if
this stuff really works.



*Arts & Sciences Roundtable*

Discussion leader: Mistress Antonia d’Allesandria,

Length: 1 hr

Brief description:  Everyone is welcome to come and discuss the Arts and
Sciences in Artemisia.

*Basic Documentation & Judging for A&S in Artemisia*

Instructor: Baroness Casamira Jawjalny

Length:  55 minutes

Basic Description of class:  This class will go over what you need to
include in your documentation and show you how the judges use that
information to evaluate your entry.

Class size: 12

Age limit: 14+

Students need to bring:  enthusiasm and writing implement



*Basic Recipe Redaction *

Instructor: Baroness Casamira Jawjalny

Length:  55 minutes

Brief Description of class:  We will go over what one needs to know to turn
a medieval recipe into something you can make.  There are a lot of
‘assumptions’ that aren’t needed if you open a modern recipe book.  Glossary
of terms, cooking equipment and methods.

Class size: 12

Age limit:  14+

Students need to bring:  enthusiasm and writing implement



*Beginning Knitting*

Instructor:  Baroness Rebecca Chadderton

Class length:  55 minutes

Brief Description of class: Learn the basics of knitting: cast on, knit,
purl, bind off. No cost if you don’t take the supplies with you or if you
bring your own.

Class size:  10

Age limit: 8

Fee:  $5 if you take a kit home

Student can bring:  worsted weight yarn and size 7, 8, 9, or 10 knitting
needles.



*Beginning Naalbinding*

Instructor:  Yashoda

Length:  55 minutes

Brief Description of class: Learn basic stitches of single-needle knitting
which pre-dates knitting and crochet.

Students need to bring:  naalbinding needle and wool yarn if you have them



*Being a Head Cook*

Instructor: Maistreas Caointiarn

Length:  55 minutes

Brief description of class: Head Cook will be a step by step guide to being
a Head Cook for a feast. I will go through the logistics and strategies of
being successful and willing to “do it again.”

*Brief History of Embroidery in England: 1160-1600 AD*

Instructor: Lady Ankharet verch Meredudd

Length: 55 minutes

Brief Description of class: A brief history of embroidery from the Norman
to 1600.

Class size: 10

*Buttons Woven on the Diagonal*

Instructor:  Mistress Antonia d’Allesandria

Length: 55 minutes

Brief Description of class: Oval buttons with woven covering as seen in
late period Middle Eastern clothing.  The thread is woven on the diagonal
rather than horizontally.

Class size:  10

Age limit: able to thread a needle and weave (or younger with adult helper)

Fee:  $1.00

Students need to bring:  reading classes if you use them



*Care & Feeding of an SCA Wardrobe*

Instructor: Dame Bronwen of Irenwold

Length: 55 minutes

Brief Description of class: Tips on how to keep your wardrobe fresh and
wearable.  Includes tips on spot cleaning on non-launderable garments and
accessories and such.

Students need to bring: notebook, pen and pencil



*Easy European Dances for Beginners*

Instructor: Mistress Esther bat Baruch

Length: 55 minutes

Brief Description of class:  We’ll learn some very easy European dances
that are popular in the SCA. Branles, Pavans, and Allemandes.  If you know
your right from your left, and have the ability to hear a beat, you can do
this!

*English Country Dance*

Instructor: Baroness Rebecca Chadderton

Length: 55 minutes

Brief Description of class:  Learn some English Country Dances

*Firearms Through the Ages*

Instructor: Baron Landolf Witkowski

Length:  55 minutes

Brief Description of class:  Brief history of the development and use of
firearms in period with amusing anecdotes and stories relevant to today’s
gun control debate.

*Fundamentals of Arabic Style Solo Dance*

Instructor: Mistress Esther bat Baruch

Length:  2 hours

Brief Description of class: We will cover the ten fundamental movement
families that make up MiddleEastern and North African solo dance.

*Gemology: a Look at the Historic Concept of Stones and Related Objects
That are Jewelry*

Brief Description of class: I will cover some of “European SCA period
jewelry,” what they accepted, and look at the differences between then and
current concepts of jewelry ornamentation.

*How to do Viking Wire Weaving*

Brief Description of class:  Learn how to do Viking wire weaving.

*Hundred Years War*

Instructor: Duke Alan Youngforest

Length: 55 minutes

Brief Description of class: Discussion on the roots and conclusions of the
long war between England and France that dominated much of the high middle
ages.

*Illumination Workshop*

Instructor: Her Ladyship Tamsyn Sutherland

Length: 110 minutes

Brief Description of class: This will be a hands-on illumination class in
which students will paint “mock” scrolls in a variety of designs. This
workshop will acquaint students with a multiple types of medieval texts
from various times and locations that can serve as unique and challenging
award scrolls. Plus, it’s fun!

*Intro to Basket Making*

Instructor: Mistress Antonia d’Alessandria

Length: 55 minutes

Brief Description of class:  An intro to basket weaving by learning to make
a small basket.

Class size:  10

Age limit: Able to manipulate and weave reads together without too much
frustration, or younger with a helper

Fee:  $2.00

Students need to bring:  a towel to keep your lap dry
