[Artemisia] Masked Ball Dance List (Barony of Arn Hold, January 26)

Hello everyone,

The 'party' begins at 5pm, but the dancing starts at 1 so we can cover all of the dances scheduled for the Ball, plus any others that are requested. 



The Dances for the evening are: 



Official Bransle (Toss the Lady) 

A line or circle of couples (any number, lady on the right) 




Double left, double right, repeat 

Grapevine 4 steps to the left, hop/kick for 2 bars (4 kicks). 

Lady steps in front of her partner to face him. 

Lady jumps and man helps her on to the left 

Everyone has a new partner 



Gathering Peasecods (Turn Yourself Around) 

A circle of any number of couples, lady on the right 




Verse 1: Circle 8 steps to the left, turn single, circle 8 steps to the left, turn single. 

Chorus: 

Men go in and star right back to partner 

Ladies go in, circle left and turn single out to partner 

*Men double forward and clap, return, women double forward as men are returning, curtsey, return, men double forward as women are returning, clap, return turning single 

Repeat the previous figure * with women going first. 

Verse 2: Side right with your partner, turn single, side left with your partner, turn single 

Repeat Chorus with genders reversed (ladies go in first) 

Verse 3: Arm right with partner, turn single, arm left with partner, turn single. 

Repeat Chorus as it was done the first time. 



Rufty Tufty 

Square sets of two couples facing each other, each set ideally offset from one another 




Verse 1: Double forward and back towards the other couple, repeat. Set and turn single (facing the other couple) repeat 

Chorus: 

Turn toward your partner to face away from other couple. Double out. Turn toward your partner to face back in, double back, and turn single 

Take corner’s hand and double out, turn toward them, double back in, and turn single. 

Verse 2: Side right and left with your partner, Set and turn single (facing the other couple) repeat 

Repeat Chorus 

Verse 3: Arm right and left with your partner, Set and turn single (facing the other couple) repeat 

Repeat Chorus 



Reel for Jeannie 

Four couples in a longwise set 



1-8 Circle 8 hands round and back 

9-16 1s take both hands to slip down the middle and back 

17-24 1s followed by other couples cast to the bottom (peel the banana), 1s make an arch and other couples go under and up to the top. 

25-32 Clap 8 times and turn partner right hand round. 



Hole in the Wall 

Long line of two couple sets. 

Sharking occurs when spectators slip into a dancer’s place. Body contact is forbidden and you must not disrupt the continuity of the dance. 



1-8 Ones cast off around twos, lead up to place 

9-16 Twos cast off around ones, lead down to place 

17-24 Lord 1 and Lady 2 change places right hand, Lady 1 and Lord 2 repeat. 

25-32 Circle four hands half round. 

33-40 Ones cast down, pulling twos up between them to progress up the line 



Black Alman 

Longwise set or Circle of any number of couples 




1-8 4 doubles forward 

9-12 Face partner, drop hands, double back, double forward 

13-16 Quarter turn left, double forward (going opposite direction from your partner), turn right round, double forward back to place 

17-24 Face partner, men set and turn single, ladies repeat. 

25-28 Take hands to turn halfway into partner’s place, slip four steps up. 

29-32 Turn half back into your own place, slip four steps back down. 

33-36 Drop hands, double backwards, double forwards (can progress to next partner) 



Petit Vriens 

Danced in threes, any mix of genders. 




1-16 Pive (chase using quick steps) around the hall, 1 taking off first and others following behind 

17-28 Dancer 1 pive (can go any direction, forward, around 2, or something else), dancer 2 pive to catch up to 1 (or something else!), dancer 3 pive to catch up to 1 and 2. 

29-34 Dancer 1 doppio (double, 4 slower steps) left, Dancer 2 doppio to catch up, Dancer 3 doppio to catch up to them 

35-40 Dancer 1 reverence to dancer 2. Dancer 2 reverence to dancer 1. Dancer 3 come around to form a triangle and all reverence. 

41-49 doppio back then forwards, set and turn single. 

Repeat, alternating who is dancer 1 



Jenny Pluck Pears 

Three couples in a circle 




1 st Verse: Circle 8 steps to the left, set and turn single to partner, Circle back to the right, set and turn single to partner. 

Chorus: 

Man 1 hands lady 1 into the center facing each other 

Man 2 does the same 

Man 3 does the same. 

All reverence. 

Men skip clockwise around the circle 

Men skip counter clockwise around the circle. 

Men hand women out in the same order. 

All reverence 

2 nd Verse: Side right, set and turn single, side left, set and turn single 

Repeat Chorus, genders reversed 

3 rd Verse: Arm right, set and turn single, arm left, set and turn single 

Repeat Chorus as the first time 



Karabushka 
Circle of couples in promenade hold, men on the inside 
This dance has Attitude and speeds up on every repeat 

2 single steps/stomps to the Right, 2 to the Left 
Single right, single left (almost a Monkee walk) 
Woman turns under, Face each other; forcefully drop hands 
Spin away from each other in 3 steps – Clap 
Spin back in 3 steps – Clap twice 
Take both hands (left hands on top); Step together/step apart 
Woman spins under to trade places 
Spin away from each other in 3 steps, clap; 
Spin back together in 3 steps, clap twice; 
Take hands (left on top) Step together/step apart 
Woman spins under - partners trade places and are back in Promenade positions 

Very last 2 notes – Men go down on one knee and direct the women to sit on the other knee (musicians will call out end of song)

It is just that the floor hates me, the tables and chairs are bullies and 
the wall gets in the way.
