I'm still working on my book collection but $800 is over the budget. Way over! Any recommendations for good and reasonable jewelry books? History or design.

Not at the moment. It went out of print during 1995.
Came out at $150, then went up for the last ones to $200.
Now if you can find one at all it is probably going to be in the $800 range.
There are a lot of very greedy bookdealers out there searching the internet
for pricing. Not finding that thing on line lets them set any price they like.
Then if anyone else decides to sell one they might undercut it by a few dollars.
I could have ordered two for $135 each at 10% discount from Scholarsbookshelf.com
but I stupidly waited two weeks for two other Laurels to give me an answer
[they didn't] so I lost out. Last time I do that. They have since said they
would pay much more for the book. So I sent them the one listing I have seen
come up online for $800. Somehow that seemed justified to me.
The one at Duke U was stolen but I still have access, I think, to one at
a local college if I need it.
It is interesting it might be reprinted. If it is the same high quality format
it will not be cheap. I would like to see it reprinted. I might buy one to
add to the library for the amazement of visitors here.
If you have a relatively good set of books on medieval jewelry or jewelry
history you will see nearly all the same pieces in them.
What I remember about this book besides the sheer size is a large part of
it is devoted,. I think, to a guild history, seems like it had something to do
with gold and pearls. Been 12 years since I've seen a copy.
So I wouldn't pay an outrageous price for it myself, but that is just me.
I want to make stuff more than I want to read a huge guild history.
Then again I have some individual articles/offprints on some of the special
pieces in
the book. Things like the Fishpool Hoard.
If you own it now it was a great investment. Carolyn you are lucky.
If you think you want it I think you ought to see a copy before you spend $200.
For a huge book a lot of it is print as opposed to pictures.
But they are usually stunning pictures.
Of course in wanting to replicate things a lot of us would prefer pictures over
many pages of print by comparison. The guild history to me simply appeared
boring. Perhaps it was the Goldsmith's Company but I think I have seen that
written up elsewhere. Lightbown has a lot of books out there for sale.
Particularly the one on French work. The one on Scandinavian Silver is
the last couple of centuries so not applicable.
Why they didn't go into reprinting almost immediately I have never been able
to understand. There were lots of people who wanted it and still do.
