Please forgive a full posting of the event announcement, but I wanted to
get the complete information on the date and site change for Metalsmiths
Symposium 5, aka Frosted Hills Gets Dirty 2 out as quickly and
thoroughly as possible.

Frosted Hills Gets Dirty 2/Metalsmiths Symposium 5 ** DATE AND LOCATION
CHANGE! ** **UPDATED**

Friday, October 27th, 2006 to Sunday, October 29th, 2006
Hosted by Shire of Frosted Hills - Fishkill, NY

*** ATTENTION, due to a site conflict our date and location have changed
for this event. We are now holding the event on the weekend of October
27th to 29th not the original date of October 13th to 15th. Please let
anyone you think might have been planning to attend know of the date and
location change.

The new site has more heated indoor space and more heated cabins than
the previous site. It is also designed to serve summer campers with
special needs so will likely be 100% handicap accessable. The cabins
are also closer to the main hall than the site we used last year so even
if the weather gets colder, it is only a few hundred yards of paved
roadways from the main halls to the heated cabins.

This new site didn't come without some additional cost, it is
approximately 2.5 times more expensive than our previous site. But
given a choice between a more expensive site with date change or
canceling altogether, we elected to move dates and sites.

As always, your donations to assist in defraying our costs to host this
event for you will be greatly appreciated and warmly thanked. We
anticipate our expenses for the site rental, dayboard food and the feast
will be circa $1800. This is offset only by the $5/bunk/night camping
fee, the $10 feast fee and your generous donations.

It rained. It poured. It was cold and soggy. But, we had so much fun
last year at our first Frosted Hills Gets Dirty that we just had to do
it again. Even with the wettest weather we could imagine, lots of
people learned to make lots of neat things and had a blast.

Therefor, we are once again pleased to invite you to come for an
exciting weekend of dirty classes that don't fit into a regular schola
or EKU format. In addition to hosting the 5th Metalsmiths Symposium, we
anticipate having classes in almost any craft, including blacksmithing,
casting, silversmithing, lampwork, pottery, woodworking, leatherwork
etc. If it's dirty, or involves heat or needs a large space, we plan to
have it. There is even a medieval pottery kiln firing being scheduled.

As if the thought of really cool classes wasn't enough. we are also
celebrating the Shire of Frosted Hills' 30th Birthday with a special
feast planned on Saturday night. We invite all current and former
residents of Frosted Hills to come and celebrate our 30th birthday with
us.

There will be a wonderful feast on Saturday night, a plentiful dayboard
most of the day Saturday and some nosh to help our guests break their
fast in the mornings. Our guests will be on their own for their Friday
meal, though there are a few restaurants that do takeout food in
Fishkill nearby. Our usual cook, Oksana Goncharova, is likely to be
busy with her first love, pottery. We are please to announce that Lady
Misha Gryffyth (Maria Dombrowski) has agreed to be head cook for the
dayboard under the tutelage of Oksana.

At this time we are unsure who will be our feast cooks, though we expect
Oksana to coordinate the menu and keep a finger (hopefully the clean
one) in things. Please contact the autocrat with any questions or
concerns about food allergies or restrictions.

There is plenty of camping space available (at least twice as many bunks
as the previous site) and we are checking on whether ground fires will
be fine. We have over a dozen heated cabins with 16-20 bunk beds
available for those who are not interested in tenting in late October.
One or two cabins will be available for the blacksmiths near where the
forges will be setup. We will likely be blocking out some bunks near
where the kiln firing will take place for the potters in attendance. If
you would like to reserve bunk space for a group that wishes to stay
together, please note that in your paid reservations. Also note if you
need a lower bunk for mobility reasons.

We are checking to see if we will still have access to a large field for
siege activities. We should have indoor space available for a siege
engine building class.

If you are interested in teaching a class, please contact us at
mss5classes at drakkar.org. We are thankful that Carowyn Silveroak will
once again be assisting us with the planning of this event. Please see
our web based class submission system at the URL below.

In addition, you can email our chancelors at mss5classes at drakkar.org
with your class proposals and requirements. We have space to have over
a dozen classes running at the same time, limited only by the generosity
of our volunteer teachers and available students.

Class information will be found at:

http://ekmg.eastkingdom.org/scheduler/index.html

Note that classes will be scheduled starting Friday afternoon/evening
and will continue early Saturday morning through late Saturday night and
pick up again on Sunday morning until we have to close the site.

Please feel free to bring books and interesting sources to share.

Watch this space for updates.

Directions:

The new site is much easier to locate than the previous site as it is
only about 2 miles from I84. Make your best route to NY Rt 9 and
Interstate 84 (Exit 13) in Fishkill, NY. Proceed south on Rt 9 turning
left at the Hess Mart on the left onto Snook Rd. Proceed up the hill
circa 1 mile bearing right at the fork onto Van Wycke Lake Rd to the
camp (less than another mile).
