For those of you on these lists who are in the Midrealm, please note. For all others, I'm really sorry for the wasted bandwidth to you. This event is held in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Greetings! Feel free to post this to anyone you think may be
interested--Siobhan
I want to draw the attention of all of you, most especially the
later period costumers, to this special presentation at ValDay 34 in
Three Hills on February 10.
Dr. Susan Steuer, Rare Book Librarian at Western Michigan
University, is taking up the reins of the 'carriage' that Dr. Tom
Amos began driving a number of years ago. This year, Dr. Steuer is
going to be presenting a fascinating seminar: "Images Of Clothing
And Costume In Medieval Manuscripts Of The 16th Century". Dr. Steuer
will be bringing with her fantastic treasures, including two very
special books: Facsimile editions of "Il Libro del Sarto" (The Book
of the Tailor) and "Trachtenbuch des Christoph Weiditz von seinen
Reisen nach Spanien (1529) und den Niederlanden (1531/32)" (the
Travel journal of Christoph Weiditz on his trips to Spain and the
Netherlands) . These are fantastic facsimiles, recently published in
very limited editions.
This class runs from 1-2pm. Limit 10 participants, with CLEAN HANDS
:-) You're going to get a hands-on opportunity to examine each of
these facsimiles, along with other documents Dr. Steuer will be
bringing with her. Attendees must NOT BRING FOOD OR DRINK to this
seminar, because the books will be laid out on tables for you to
handle. You -may- bring paper and writing implements for making
sketches.
Each of these facsimiles is low on text, and VERY high on drawings!
These are tremendous resources for late period costumers, ones they
may -never- have had an opportunity to see so closely.
Dr. Steuer is very excited to be able to share these materials with
us. In the past, Dr. Amos had brought materials with a scribal
emphasis, but Dr. Steuer would like to branch out into different
topics each year. This year's topic is the costume area.
Please make time in your busy ValDay to check out this cool lecture
and see these fantastic books!
