Canfield-Baber has now been honored by Gov. Steve Bullock.

Canfield-Baber, 32, is one of seven recipients of the statewide 2016 =
ServeMontana outstanding volunteer service award, whittled down from 60 =
individuals and organizations nominated by the public last year.

An energetic, articulate advocate for youth foster care, he works with =
students shooting for a college education as outreach manager for the =
Student Assistant Foundation out of his office located on the fourth =
floor of Butte High School.

Just as he has a mountain of information to share with college-bound =
seniors and students who may need other outreach services, Carolynn =
Bright, SAF communications director in Helena, can=E2=80=99t say enough =
about the 2002 Helena High graduate:

=E2=80=9CSchylar is an incredibly talented man who is a valued member of =
the Student Assistance Foundation team. We, and the students of =
southwest Montana, are fortunate that he chooses to live and work here.

=E2=80=9CHaving overcome tremendous obstacles as a young person himself, =
Schylar is an outstanding advocate for student success, especially for =
students who are growing up in the foster care system.=E2=80=9D

His outreach spans southwest Montana, where he=E2=80=99s often on the =
road conducting financial aid nights at 10 high schools, three college =
campuses and a dozen partner organizations in eight counties.

He=E2=80=99s a force to reckon with, as he parlayed his tough =
experiences growing up as a foster child into exemplary service and =
dedication.

=E2=80=9CGrowing up in foster care has impacted every aspect of my =
life,=E2=80=9D Canfield-Baber told The Standard. =E2=80=9CI have an =
ability to support young people going through very difficult and =
sometimes unstable situations. I am more dedicated to helping =
underserved populations and believe that every person matters, as well =
as their opinions.=E2=80=9D

A spokesman for others in the foster care system, he serves on =
FosterClub boards, Childwise Institute and the Protect Montana=E2=80=99s =
Kids Commission, among other boards. Previously, he was president of the =
Board of Directors of Montana CASA, or Court Appointed Special =
Advocates.

Six individuals and one department won the ServeMontana award, but =
Canfield-Baber was the only person from Butte to do so.

The governor lauded all recipients last week at the state Capitol for =
their =E2=80=9Cdedication and commitment to service=E2=80=9D and for =
=E2=80=9Cgreatly=E2=80=9D enhancing civic life in Montana. The Montana =
Commission on Community Service made final selections.

As a foster child, Canfield-Baber bounced from home to home and school =
to school. He started living on his own at age 16 through an AWARE =
independent living program.

=E2=80=9CI was very surprised I got the award,=E2=80=9D he said. =
=E2=80=9CI experienced just as much trauma within the system as I did =
from my abusive biological family. For me, my volunteer and advocacy =
work are almost therapeutic. Many foster youth aren=E2=80=99t as =
resilient as I have been, and need someone to advocate on their =
behalf.=E2=80=9D

His talent lies in paying it forward.

=E2=80=9CMost importantly =E2=80=94 I have developed strong coping and =
survival skills that I am able to pass on to those I work with,=E2=80=9D =
he added. =E2=80=9CTo me, it is about helping people help =
themselves.=E2=80=9D
