Greetings,

(Paul?) Thank you for your thoughts, they are well-considered.

I would like to discuss the relative merits of a tiered system at SRWC next weekend. I am now trying to figure out where would be a good place to meet.

One comment though: since the Stationers comprise a number of different (though related) disciplines, the idea of a book as a token of apprenticeship opens up some interesting possibilities.

First, I believe the prospective apprentice should make his or her own book, as an indication of their interest and demonstration of their level of skill. A simple paper-bound book requires minimal skill, and may be made without expensive tools or materials. It would then serve as a notebook during the apprentice's tenure, and could be incorporated into the apprentice's masterwork:

A binder could re-bind it into a more elaborate binding
A printer could set some of the contents in type, and print copies
An engraver could cut a wood block and print an illustration into the book

Discussion?
