Lyle, Thanks for this handout--and I would enjoy a copy of your other stuff. I wish I couild attend your classes--they sound fascinating. However, I am staying closer to home lately. Did you get my message that I entered a six-way book in an art show? Were you the one who sent me a photo of a Medieval book found in a Swedish Museum? Thanks either way. As you plan your schedules for Gulf Wars, consider please two Al-Mahala classes in your choices: Thursday, from 10-noon, Class Tent A, Intro to Islamic Book BindingThis hands-on class covers the basics of constructing and covering an Islamic envelope-flap-style binding, used across the Islamic world from ~900 AD to present times. We will create a book block, cover the book, and learn some simple tooling embellishment (if we have time). Also included is a brief overview of the history of Islamic book bindings. Some prior experience is helpful, but not required.Class fee: $15Limit: 5 hands-on, unlimited observersAges 16+ Friday, from 1-3, Class Tent B, Islamic Book Binding EmbellishmentThis class will be an overview of Islamic bookbinding embellishment styles in SCA period, from Mamluk Egyptian bindings to Mughal Indian bindings (and everything in between). We'll talk about leatherwork, gilding, painting, and cutwork. Builds on the Intro to Islamic Bookbinding class (bring your book if you made one).Class fee: noneLimit: NoneAges 16+ I am teaching both of these. If you aren't going to be at Gulf Wars but would like a handout, send me an email and let me know! I don't have one for the embellishment class, but am happy to chat about it with anyone. Thank you all for your time! In service, THL Margavati Bai
