Job Description The Central Library in the Chesapeake Public Library system is looking for an enthusiastic, customer-oriented librarian to manage an active Reference Department. This department serves as resource to 5 area libraries and a bookmobile; it includes a public law library, State & Federal documents depository and local history collections. This position supervises 6 librarians and 6 paraprofessionals under the direction of the Central Library Manager. Duties include providing reference service using print, electronic online resources, instructing technology classes, supervising adult programming, preparing reports, leading scheduled system-wide meetings, and participating in system strategic planning. In-depth knowledge of computers and associated software, the Internet and electronic reference services is essential. . . Knowledge of law library, government documents and local history collections is highly desirable. A strong public service commitment, excellent oral and written communication skills, and ability to maintain effective working relationships are required. The ideal candidate will be a problem-solver and an exemplar of professional leadership. Requires an ALA/MLS and a minimum of 2 years professional librarian experience. Supervisory experience is required. Must be eligible for certification as a Professional Librarian by the Commonwealth of Virginia. An acceptable state criminal history report and valid driver's license are required.   
Required Qualifications VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL: 
Requires American Library Association accredited Master's degree in Library Science. 

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: 
Virginia Public Librarian Certificate required within three months of employment. 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 
Requires over two years of experience as a professional librarian and one year of supervisory experience. Public library experience preferred but other library experience considered. 

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: 
Requires light work that involves walking or standing most of the time, exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a recurring basis, skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of electronic office machines within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy. 

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: 
The job risks exposure to dust. 

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: 
The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, depth perception, and texture perception.   
Preferred Qualifications Public library experience preferred but other library experience considered.
