Well, Wikipedia says this:

"Manila got its name from *may nilad*,
Tagalog<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tagalog_language>for "there is
nilad <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nilad>," in reference to the flowering
mangrove plant that grew on the marshy shores of the bay. "

Re. Manilla hemp -
Britannica online says:
" (*Musa textilis*), plant of the family Musaceae, and its fibre, which is
second in importance among the leaf
fibre<http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9047504/leaf-fibre>(
*q.v.*) group. Abaca fibre, unlike most other leaf fibres, is obtained from
the plant leaf stalks (petioles <http://www.britannica.com/memberlogin>).
Although sometimes known as Manila hemp, Cebu hemp, or Davao hemp, the abaca
plant is not related to true hemp.

The plant, native to the <http://www.britannica.com/memberlogin>
Philippines…" <http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9108539/Philippines>
Re. manila rope -
Wikipedia says, regarding 'tarring rope' :
"Some types of rope must be protected from rot by *tarring*, coating the
rope with tar <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tar>.
Hemp<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemp>rope requires tarring, but
Manila <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manila_hemp>, cotton, and synthetics do
not."

This would imply that Manila rope probably is made from Manila hemp / abaca
since it doesn't need tarring as a real hemp rope would.

Re. Manila paper -
Merriam-Webster Online says:
" Main Entry: *manila paper*
Function: *noun*
Usage: *often capitalized M*
*:* a strong and durable paper of a brownish or buff color and smooth finish
made originally from Manila hemp

Note - these are not necessarily absolutely authoritative sources. (Your
mileage may not vary, but your fueling source might.)
