[Sca-librarians] Ethics Session: Agenda

I was the final session of the day, the joint session.  Let me just say that
taking the mic from your County President who just announced that severance
packages were going to be offered the following week and that layoffs were
likely was extreemly difficult.  Yep, life has been interesting (in the
Chinese sense) since returning from Pennsic.

After stumbing around for a few minutes, everything went well.  People were
even engaged in what we were doing.

The vast majority of our staff are front line folks with a variety of
backgrounds ranging from high school graduates to multiple masters degrees
with masters level librarians in the minority.  I share that to set the
context for my session.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES After attending this session colleagues will be able to:

1) recognize their personal values

2) understand how values, morals & ethics work together

3) review our profession's fundamental ethics

4) apply ethical behavior to customer interactions

5) hold themselves, coworkers and volunteers accountable to our ethics

6) agree on future ethical tool or training needs

Session Agenda:



   - Introduction 15 min
      - Aesop's fable
      - What is the moral of the story? What are stories like these able to
      teach?
      - What we're going to do & what you'll get out of the session
      - What are morals, values & ethics?
   - Clarify personal values 10 min
      - Identifying my values activity  *The president's address both cut
      into the session's time and threw me off.  We did not do this activity
      together, but they took it home.*
   - Review ALA's Code of Ethics 20 min
      - Read through the Code of Ethics  5min  *There were more than 80
      people attending, so I prearranged 8 group leaders.  Each read
an article of
      the Code and lead a small group.*
      - Small group activity ~ What does it mean?  How do we demonstrate it?
      15 min
      - Share one or two discussions
   - Practice applying ethics ~ small group activity ~ hypothetical
   situations 15 min
      - Give out candy
      - Share one or two scenarios
   - Conclusion  10 min
      - Review what we did
      - What questions are left unanswered?
      - How should we continue these kinds of conversations?
      - LL email follow-up
   - Evaluation & take-aways
