*CROWNS AND CORONETS defined as a single device to signify rank within
the scope of our time period of study (Pre-17th century). Any medium
that is appropriate to the period is acceptable.
Judging areas in this category are defined as:
DOCUMENTATION_ General description. Lists and dates when types of
materials, techniques and tools were available to be used. Have
drawings, pictures, ,and diagrams been included. Cite examples, list
sources. Is a bibliography included
COMPLEXITY AND/OR DIFFICULTY _Complexity of steps in creating this item.
Was the item constructed using period tools or techniques where
practical (like coping saws or chisels instead of mechanical saw,
gold_plating substituted for fire_gilding, etc.) Complexity of design
and steps involved. Was the pattern original, hand_drafted,
reproduction, commercial, or a combination. Difficulty of execution with
construction techniques, materials, and embellishments used
WORKMANSHIP_ Well_finished, structurally sound, complete, finely
wrought. Materials used were period or reasonable facsimiles thereof
(i.e., brass or gold/fill substituted for carat gold, semi_precious
stones substituted for precious, modern glass rods or sheet used, etc.).
If leather are the edges finished. Are any decorations and accessories
well executed and securely attached. Is stitching secure. Are seams
finished. Are dyes, paints and finishes, if used, evenly applied. Do
they rub off. Are cut pieces well cut and fastened together securely. Is
articulation, if any, smooth, flexible and sturdy. If any clasps,
hinges, catches or handles are used, are they securely attached and
fully functional. Is the work clean.
AESTHETIC QUALITIES_ Is the product finished properly. Is it
attractively presented. Has artistry, if appropriate, been shown in the
choice of materials used. Is the overall effect pleasing and/or useful.
Design appropriate for item in period. Is the piece clean, neat, and
well constructed. Are any attached accessories appropriate to the piece.
Are they well chosen and executed. Are styles used appropriate to the
period of the piece. Does the design fill its space appropriately. Are
any attached accessories appropriate to the piece. Are they well chosen
and executed. Is the design pleasing. Is the overall effect pleasing.
CREATIVITY AND/OR AUTHENTICITY_ An authentic reproduction requires the
use of creativity. To what degree has the entrant used creativity in
adapting materials, tools, and processes. Does it give the appearance
and impression of a period work.

* You will be given a ticket when you bring your item in for this
category....you will need this ticket to redeem your item from the lock
boxes at the end of the day.
* A tag with your number will need to be attached to the item
* All safety measurers are being taken to insure the safety of your
item. They include plans for:
1. A locked showcase to house the Crowns made by M’lady Oona Ni'Sean
U'Brian of House Blackshield in the Barony of Atenveldt
2. Private Guard for security (thank you to the House Sleeping Dragon of
Atenveldt(AKA the Brute Squad)
3. Only the judges will be allowed to touch the Crowns. Judges will be
wearing gloves.

*BOOKBINDING: defined as a single object that shows the skills of
binding a book together during the scope of our time period of study
(Pre-17th century). Any medium that is appropriate to the period is
acceptable.
Judging areas in this category are defined as:
DOCUMENTATION: General description. List dates when types of materials,
techniques and tools were available to be used. Have drawings, pictures,
and diagrams been included? Cite examples, list sources. Is a
bibliography included?
COMPLEXITY AND/OR DIFFICULTY: Are all elements regular, well-formed
consistent, no visible corrections. Is the work extremely complex or
difficult, are there significant challenges executed. Are techniques in
keeping with the style used?
WORKMANSHIP: Is the piece a balanced, well proportioned, appropriate to
the period / style? Is binding material appropriate to period style
chosen? Have period pigments and/or inks been used. Do the compositional
elements reflect a period style? Were period tools (brushes, pens,
etc.), or reasonable substitutes used. Is design appropriate to intended
period? Are letters evenly and correctly formed? Is the page layout
appropriate and well designed?
AESTHETIC QUALITIES: Does the work successfully recreates the style
chosen? Does the artist demonstrated mastery? Is the item pleasing to
the eye?
CREATIVITY AND/OR AUTHENTICITY: An authentic reproduction requires the
use of creativity. To what degree has the entrant used creativity in
adapting materials, tools, and processes? Does it give the appearance
and impression of a period work?

* Judges will be wearing gloves when judging.
* A magnifying glass is suggested for viewing.
