Re: Thought for discussionI pretty much agree with Sir Greg's definition, it's not so much material or monetary generosity as it is personal generosity, giving of yourself.

Anyone else want to jump in on this?

Remember that this is only how I describe Largesse, it is not the "one true" definition. As I've said throughout this conversation, you are likely to get at the very least a slightly different answer out of every Peer.

Largesse to me, is giving freely of oneself, generosity of spirit. This one is actually a fairly easy dictionary definition. The trick is what it translates into in the SCA.

Primarily I think of service: Autocratting, teaching, being an officer, washing dishes, helping put up pavilions, etc without thought of anything in return except self satisfaction. It can also mean sharing your home as crash space. It could mean giving away a prize won at a tourney. It could mean donating to your local group or Kingdom during fundraisers. It could mean giving up your older garb as donor garb. Pretty much any time, effort, or goods that you give.

How much Largesse do you need to be a Peer? What types of Largesse are "better" than others? Again, you'll get a different answer from everyone. You are better off just doing what you can and doing it to please yourself.

  Gregory
