Archers of Artemisia, take heed.

Today marks the beginning of the 4th season of the Artemisia Archery
Challenge. This is our Kingdom's Winter shooting venue.

The Honorable Hachmood Braden has graciously volunteered to host the
shoot again this year. For those who may have missed the announcement in
the Sage, here it is.

"
As winter puts its hold on the Gryphon's lands, I issue a challenge to the
archers of Artemisia to prove their worth this winter in the fourth
annual Artemisian Archer Challenge.

This competition will pit groups of the Kingdom against one another to
see who will claim the prize. At stake, the title of "Hood of the Wood
and his Merry Men"; a collection of bright green tassels, and the claim
that your group is home the finest archers of the Kingdom.

Currently the Shire of Gryphon's Lair led by Lord Owen ap Howell and his
Merry Men and Women, hold this prize, ....with a narrow victory

The shoot will use 3-color period-style archery targets placed at 20
yards. There will be six ends at this range, three static with 6
arrows/bolts and three 30 second timed with archer in three different
positions: standing, kneeling and sitting.

Standing will be a standard archery stance with the feet being the only
contact with the floor. Kneeling will be a stance where at least one
knee is in contact with the floor, but not the posterior of the body.
Sitting will be a stance where both sides of the posterior of the body
are in contact with the floor. Archers may sit either straight or
cross-legged, or some such combination thereof.

Scoring:
Targets will be 3-color period targets measuring 60cm in size. The
breakdown of the targets is as follows:

     Gold - 8 points:
       (anything inside the 6cm circle)
     Green - 4 points:
(anything between the 6cm circle and the 24cm circle)
     White - 2 points:
(anything between the 24cm circle and the 60cm circle)

Scores will be compiled with the average of the top four scores from
four different archers from each group in the Kingdom, over the course
of the tournament season. The group with the highest average at the end
of the season will be declared victorious.

A handicap of scoring will be used to more normalize the playing field
again this year:

Archers that scored below 100 last year in the shoot will shoot the
normal compliment of 6 arrows/bolts at each static round.

Archers that scored between 100 and 120 last year will only be allowed 5
arrows/bolts in the static kneeling round.

Archers that scored between 120 and 140 last year will be allowed 5
arrows/bolts in the static kneeling and static standing rounds.

Archers that scored between 140 and 160 last year will be allowed 5
arrows/bolts in each of the static rounds.

Archers that scored over 160 last year will be allowed only 4
arrows/bolts in the static standing and static kneeling and 5
arrows/bolts in the static sitting.

Archers may shoot the AAC once per day. If the archer shoots more than
one round of the AAC in a day, then only the first round counts toward
the competition.

Scoresheets must be mailed to TH Hachmood Braden, within 21 days of the
shooting of the round. All scores with the exception of those from
Uprising must be postmarked no later than June 1st, 2004. E-mailed
copies of the scoresheets are acceptable and can be sent to TH Hachmood
Braden at ' bradman9 <at> juno <dot> com '.

Equipment:
Archers may any standard SCA archery equipment, adhering to the rules
for such equipment explained in the Artemisian Archery Handbook.

(make sure before you shoot crossbows, that the public range where you
shoot allows them).
