Ahhhh! It probably is an artificial fiber. (a "burn test," such as
others have suggested, would give you a more definite answer.) My best
advice would be to go to your local fabric store, and find something
similar in feel, etc. And if it's stiff at all like taffeta, it may not
be washable, but could no doubt be dry-cleaned. I've heard that washing
taffeta can do dreadful things to the fabric.
If I've misunderstood your description, I'd try Caryn's suggestion. You
may find that it washes just fine if you do it by hand (I wouldn't try
it in hot water, given the type of fabric it sounds like), or that the
fabric is okay but the colors run, or any one of a number of things.
And, of course, you should probably keep it out of Her Grace Corisande's
view...I've been given to understand that she has a "thing" for fleurs!
