A major hoard of Roman silver has been found by archaeologists at
Pompeii. A man fleeing the erruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 had placed the
20 pieces of silver tableware - from goblets to trays - into a wicker
basket and was fleeing when overcome by fumes. His skeleton was found
next to the basket. The press report assumes he was the owner, but the
chaos and panic when thousands fled would also have provided ample
opportunity for looters.
