This is along the lines of what I have been thinking. I work as a
paralegal in my other reality and I can tell you that part of the problem
with what some people think of as "frivolous" lawsuits is mixed messages.
This school appears to have a mixed message with their zero tolerance
policy. They state they have a zero tolerance policy, but it is ok to pay
to advertise something that they will not otherwise print because they
claim it promotes violence. So is it really the violence issue or does the
principal have a problem with something he thinks is wierd or unacceptable
and this was the only excuse he could come up with to keep it out of the
main part of the year book. The school further mixes the message by
allowing a mascot to carry a weapon, which I assume is carried at school
functions. I would be willing to bet that the mascot, with weapon, appears
frequently throughout the year book also. It almost appears as if the
school is doing a selective enforcement of their zero tolerance policy.
These policies can be good and can provide extra safety in this day and
age when there is such a problem with violence in schools. But if it is
not applied uniformly in all areas, then it sends the message that this
will not be tolerated, except when we decide to make an exception. Just my
point of view from other strange cases I have seen.
