In 1935, an old long distance teamster wrote that American teamsters
would give up their bells as payment for help. I never checked to
see if this were true or something he made up.
Harness and Pack, Arthur Treadwell Walden, 1935. American Book
Company
(Mr. Walden was famous for frieghting with dogs, but he also worked
with horses and mules.)
I also read somewhere that there were old USA traffic laws that
required a vehicle to have bells if it were pulled by an unshod
draft animal. The bells were to warn pedistrians of the approach of
the vehicle. When snow was on the ground, all vehicles had to have
bells since snow muffles the sound of horse shoes on pavement.
Hence, why we associate "bells" with sleighs.
Side note: Canine carts used in New York City in the 19th century
were well known for their bells.

Chapter 7, The Jerk-Rein Freight Team
Pages 66 - 68
As with the teams used on the Conestoga wagon, the driver rode the
nigh-wheel horse. ... A long jerk rein that ran to the bit of the
nigh leader provided the driver with his only means of control. ...
The leaders always had high bows of bells over their collars. These
bells, by their constant jingling, gave warning of the approach of
these long teams on narrow trails. This was necessary because the
teams were so long and the roads so crooked that the leading pair
were often entirely out of sight of the driver. ...
There were several reasons for hauling freight in three wagons (with
one large team of 20 plus horses/mules) in this manner. ... The
other advantage was that if they got stuck in the mud they could be
uncoupled. Then each wagon could be pulled out separately. ...
Sometimes a wagon would get into such deep mud that the freighter
could not pull it out even with all his horses. Then he would have
to wait until some other freighter happened along who would couple
on to him and pull him out. When this happened it was the custom
for the man who gave help in this way to take the bells from the
lead horses of the man in trouble. ... Sometimes a man would get as
many as four sets of bells on a single trip and lose them all on the
next trip. These bells often cost as much as twenty-five dollars a
set and for that reason the loss or gain was great, as was also the
sorrow or the pride.

Not quite the same subject, but chariot "bells" have been found in
chariot burial sites in Europe. The chariot "bells" are bronze
disks and/or bronze rings that were hung on the linch pins or on
the chariot pole tip, or from bit check pieces.
Photographs of these chariot "bells" (rattle pendants) are in
Piggott's book 1983 book.
