[Artemisia] February's Fiber Workshop

Hi Michael,
The spinning is really basic stuff. Lots of people have drop spindles, but
not too many have spinning wheels; this gives them a chance to try some out.
I agree with Gefjon's post (on a separate post) -- spinning wheels really
need to be balanced well to work well (otherwise it's just a lot of, well,
work and not much fun). That doesn't mean you can't do it. Lady Mom's Lord
Husband, Gearoid, borrowed my wheel for awhile and then made her one. It's
based on my wheel, but he made some modifications and did a beautiful job.
Not only does it look good, but it is well balanced and spins easily. You
might talk to him about how he went about making her spinning wheel.
By the same token, even drop spindles need to be balanced. If they aren't
they don't spin as long and are also more work to get yarn from.
Since you are going to make a wheel, you have many options available in
wheel styles as there are a great many different designs for spinning
wheels. I'm sure you could go on-line and get a lot of information. If
possible, it's a good idea to talk to people and find out what they like and
don't like about their wheel; have your wife try out as many wheels as
possible to see what she likes and doesn't like about them. In my case, I
injured both my knees several years ago -- they don't bother me a lot, but
they do sometimes. I have a single treadle Louet S10 Spinning Wheel (which
I love) but I can't spin as long as I would like to because my knee starts
hurting; some day I will get a double treadle wheel.

I don't spin but I'm getting ready to make a spinning
wheel for my wife. How basic is the spinning class
going to be as this my help me during the construction
if I actually knew more of what I'm actually making.
