And because I've been there, my two cents:

We're a whole family of Navy folks so good luck and God Bless from all of us in House Holloway! He'll come back with some *great* stories! - Absolutely true! When you start to share a sea story, everyone listens up.

Here's some advice from the Naval Sages over here:

A monkey stealing your ball off the fairway in Thailand is one stroke. - Also, if playing in Florida, take the drop, because that alligator isn't going to move a safe distance from your ball for a long time.

Don't pick up the change the waitress gives you in Singapore. Yes, it's an interesting trick and yes, she must have amazing muscles there. Leave the change. - Besides, you'll get to see what "dirt poor" really means and they probably need it more than you.

If you get the chance to become a Shellback, don't wimp out on the Wog Ceremony. Do something memorable on Wog Revolt Day, the day before, like getting your hands on a mike and stirring up the revolt. Besides, Australia is super cool! - I'd say the ceremony is easier on a submarine.. reason two to go subs!

Don't decide to do a surface ship instead of a boomer just because you don't think you can go an entire tour without seeing the sky. Believe it or not, you'll discover you won't be topside much anyway, and the extra $5K+ for sub duty is NICE! - if you don't need the stability of the boomer life style, take the fast attacks, you get to play some cool war games and see more ports! I lived this version of the Navy, and submarines are an interesting lifestyle.

Write your mother. She misses you. - and don't write that girl you haven't talked to in two years because you're lonely :)

Best of luck out there and if you get the chance to invest in stock about to go public, take it. You're in the frickin' Navy, dude, the safest place in the world for investments. Worst case scenario, you end up eating at the mess hall or galley and wearing a uniform every day. You'll soon discover that won't really change if you invest in something. Best case, you'll get a hardship discharge because you need to be home to manage your fortune. - and invest those enlistment bonus on something more useful than a cool car, the ladies like the uniform as much as a nice ride.

Oh and take classes to get your degree while in the Navy. Trust me, you won't really have anything else to do, and it will matter after you get out. - AMEN!

Good luck with your journey, you're entering one of the most respected occupations out there.
