another thought.. it would be nice if the previous youth champions could donate an hour or two to teach the younger ones too. plus/or let the young one know of their experience in competing. maybe it wouldn't seem so scarey or hard then coming from another young person.

Wow, how long ago did this happen?
It would be interesting to know if the parents of said youth were either Laurels themselves, and/or the submissions of the children were based on the similar interests of their parents or some other person.
In this day and age of palm pilots, cell phones, and other hand held distractions, it is oft times very difficult to get young people to focus on anything other than their computer games, even while at events. One thing I will note is that once you do get their attention, you would be amazed at how attentive they can be, and how quickly they learn.
It is also difficult to get adults who have an in-depth (or even basic) knowledge of assorted A&S activities to volunteer to teach their skills to children, especially children that are not theirs. Keep in mind, the youth minister may also not know who you are or what you know.
To the person or persons who took the time to work with these young people and help generate their interest in the Arts and Sciences,
a hearty Vivat and thank you!!!
To the other persons out there who have the knowledge and skill, the youth ministers of Artemisia need you. Won't you consider contacting your local youth minister, letting them know what your fields of interest or specialty are, and offering an hour or two of your time to teach a class to the kids?
You'll be glad that you did.

Marie is correct in this. We have had several Kingdom Youth A&s Champions,
but only in years when there were youth competing. One year the champion
sheared the sheep, carded the wool, spun the wool, died the spun wool in
two
different colors, then wove the wool into a beautiful scarf which she
entered.
Another year (in which there were three different youth entries) the winner
planted her own herbs, grew them to maturity, harvested them and processed
them using three different methods and created a balm based on a period
recipe.
The first entrant was 13 at the time and the second was 8 at the time.
They
both also submitted documentation that would have competed well with most
adult entries.
