This discussion about the uses and theory of language is fascinating. Allow 
me to insert an opinion based on the pragmatic concerns of a youth minister:

Should any adult refer to or address young SCAdians as "brats," then said 
adult ought to have documentation for period usage of that term close to 
hand -- so it can be whipped out the second a parent takes umbrage. (And 
they will.) Not justifying your choice of semantic could place the MOY in 
the middle of an uncomfortable and totally unnecessary moment of 
confrontation.  Such an act I would consider a grave discourtesy.

With that caveat in place: Smalls, rugrats, kids...I don't care what term 
you may use for them...
