That would depend...period for whom? and where? and when? There are a couple of extant whole-cloth quilts (done in trapunto, IIRC), and there are several extant "arming coats" that I'm aware of--one is 14th? century, and the others are 16th. The 16th century ones can be pretty fancy--I've often thought they'd be tres cool for fencing. I'd have to dig out my costuming books to find out more details. At least one of the ones I recall was done in leather.

is it period to use cotton canvas or a very heavily woven linen or ??
Cotton or wool batting?
A particular quilting design stitch?
Any surviving pieces to telll us?
