I will not try to find a babysitter or pawn my children off on someone else so that I can volunteer a few hours. My husband and I both participate in different activities that go on at the event and we schedule what we can do around which one of us will be with our boys. I pay good money to come spend my one vacation of the year with my friends. Ask me to volunteer, let me decide on my own to volunteer... but please don't tell me I have to or that someone else in my household will have to take my hours for me. Guilting people into volunteering is never good. I know how hard it is to run events and how essential volunteers are, but I think you should allow households (etc) to decide whether or not they want to be in the 'volunteer hours competition' rather than telling them they have to.

This is just my opinion. It is not meant to be hurtful to anyone. Uprising is just my vacation.....

Megen raises a good point (aside from the vacation issue - which is also a good point) that I had not thought of. Those of us coming with children have the ongoing issue of child care. My children are old enough to fend for themselves for an hour, or even for a few hours by themselves, but there are many parents whose children cannot. I am all for volunteering, both practicing it for myself and calling (read begging/pleading) for others to do so. Volunteering is what makes the SCA run. However, when it becomes a requirement, it leads to the very issues that are mentioned above.

The volunteer competition is a great idea and I think that will encourage groups to do what the can to put in their time. Mandatory volunteering is really somewhat of an oxymoron and I feel this should be reconsidered.
