Two words: Roof Rack.
We travel almost exclusively in a Suburu Outback and it is great! We can pack our 10' X 10' merchant tent, 4 large plastic totes worth of gear, 3 folding chairs, three stools, 2 tables, 2 6' sign posts, a 14'X20' camp tent, 3 airbeds, blankets, pillows and sleeping bags for the air beds, 3 large suitcases, a cooler, a camp stove, and three henna girls of various shapes and sizes into it with relative ease and comfort.
Of course, there was this one time when we fit all of that (minus the 14'X20' tent) into a 2 door Honda Civic, too, but we sacrificed most of the ease and all of the comfort to do it.
Fully loaded, Ruby Sue the Suburu gets between 21-25 mpg and is a champ in all weather and road conditions. She has a great ground clearance, too, which makes it wonderful for bumpy roads and other interesting terrain that we SCAdians seem to love to camp in.
  As Ever,
  Rowynn
