FWIW - IMHO
To quote from the description posted at lists.gallowglass.org: "The Aerie,
the mailing list for the Kingdom of Artemisia, in the Society for Creative
Anachronism, Inc. Although this is an unmoderated list, we ask that SCA
standards of honor, courtesy and Chivalry be applied to your posts."
A couple of things of note here:
First, this mailing list for the Kingdom, and therefore, any member of the
Kingdom may participate. Although the implication is that discussion will be
on topics of interest to the members of the Kingdom as it relates to the
SCA, there is no expressed restriction of topic. Subsequently, any member of
the list may initiate and participate in any topic or subject of interest to
them.
Secondly, this is indicated to be an unmoderated list. Unless something has
changed, or this description is in error, no one has the authority to step
in and quash a discussion by claiming to be a moderator. And, until the
description is changed, any discussion is fair game so long as it has active
participation.
Thirdly, the SCA standards of honor, courtesy and Chivalry are expected to
be observed when making posts. Not the romantic ideal of 'the perfect gentle
Knight' nor the 'rough warriors of William Marshall's time'. Not even the
code of Bushido. The *SCA standards of honor, courtesy and Chivalry*. And
those alone.
Where does that leave us?
The first two points mean that if someone wants to discuss what phone
technology was like in their flyspeck of a town when they were young, and a
group of people want to participate in that discussion, then the discussion
is allowable and acceptable, and no one has the right or authority to demand
that such a discussion cease, or threaten sanction if it doesn't.
The third point means that someone owes someone an apology.
