[Artemisia] A Question for the Vikings

Living out in the country, I have access to bushels and bushels of wild rose
hips. When in bloom, these wild roses are the typical five-petaled pink
rose. They look VERY much like our own heraldic rose. I have successfully
made rose hip jelly out of these hips. It tastes like a cool, sunny October
day when stuffed into an ebelskiver in January. Is this wild type of rose
hip suitable for soup? And, I take it that it doesn't matter if the hip is
soft, as they are wont to be after a frost. So my second question is would
they be suitable for harvesting and preparing THIS time of year? Many are
still clinging to the bush.
Thanks for the info and the inspiration!
