Greetings,
We are sorry to postpone the May 3rd gathering, but must do so because
of family concerns. Guillaume's son will be deporting to Iraq soon and
we are driving to the Ft Lewis, WA, area to visit him and his wife and
their 1-yr old son.
The new date is May 24. We will start at 9a.m. with some ground work on
classical riding skills followed by saddle-time to put these skills to
work. We will start with cavalry drills, advance to handling swords from
horseback and end with crest combat. Protective headgear for crest
combat is a helmet with a face grill (about 1" squares) or fencing mask.
The crest should be attached so it can easily be dislodged by a minimal
force blow. Boffer-type weapons are used for this activity. It can be
constructed with 1/2-inch schedule 40 pvc capped at both ends covered
with at least 1/2-inch foam padding. If quillions are used, they should
not extend beyond the hand when held. The tip of the sword must have
1-inch padding. The use of a LARP sword is permitted provided the
opponent is wearing a fencing mask. Hand protection is suggested. If you
do not have any of these items, we have some to loan. The kit class held
afterwards will focus on items needed for mounted sword play... bring a
notebook.

Academy da Cavalaria teaches the history of horsemanship and the art of
riding well by the words of the 15th century accomplished horseman and
Portuguese King Dom Duarte. “This art brings, besides other advantages,
courage to the heart.” The Royal Book of Horsemanship, Jousting and
Knightly Combat, Dom Duarte’s Bem Cavalgar (To Ride Well).
Begin with the basics in how to attain and keep the classical riding
seat required for effective mounted gaming. Advance to weapons handling
and learn techniques for mounted combat, jousting and hunting from
horseback. Spend a minimum of 4-hours in the saddle each clinic. In
addition, there will be historical studies, workshops on building a
proper kit (horse and rider) and after revels!
