No, it really isn't. Even though I have not asked my doctor to prescribe a companion/therapy dog for me, my dog has, on three separate ocassions, stopped me from swallowing all of my meds at once so that I don't have to fight with the SSA anymore, simply by standing on my lap, front paws on my chest, and looking me in the eye. That is one of the primary purposes of companion and therapy dogs/pets for disabled people- someone (my Cardhu is NOT a "something") who loves us no matter what, and depends on us to take care of them. When you hit rock bottom, that little tilt of the head and lick on the cheek can make the difference between holding on for one more day or giving up entirely. Being one not-very-large step above rock bottom, I can say that from experience.
