discovery channel has this series, they don't spend a lot of hype on it, called "fight quest".  It's two guys, one ex-bodyguard and one pro -MMA, who travel the world learning about the traditional martial art of a place for a week, then they fight a local champion in that style- wing chun in Hong Kong, muy thai in thailand, stick-fighting in fiji, etc.  I encourage all fighters to watch this show for two reasons- they do a real, in-depth discussion of the history of the style, and how environment shaped it; the fight every week demonstrates the same thing- with only a week to learn, they always revert to their own fighting style.

I guess the moral of the story is "to be able to fight in a style, spend more than one week learning it".
