IIII is still used in place of IV on many clocks, and IV didn't come
into vogue until the mid-1300s.

Forty Four.  Or Anno Societatis quattuor et quadraginta.

Or ... "How many scribes and heralds are going to mess up for the next

beginning of May" ;-)
